The Post Graduate Program in History (PPGH) at the Universidade Federal de Goiás – UFG – is one of the oldest in Brazil. When the master program was created in 1972 it was the first outside of the southeast and also the first in central Brazil. In 2003 the doctorate program was established. More than 400 masters and PHD’s graduated since then. Today, they work in many different Brazilian institutions. The Program currently has 31 professors, among which eight are senior researchers.

PPGH has an open history and human sciences persuasion and stimulates a permanent multi-disciplinary effort. These characteristics are evident in the diverse areas where professors work and, institutionally are present in the dynamics of the various  Laboratories and Research Centers. These are reflected, as well, in its organization, that has the concentration area: Culture, Frontiers and Identities and four research lines: 1) History, Memory and Social Imaginaries; 2) Power, “Sertão” and Identities; 3) Frontiers, Intercultural Studies and Teaching History; 4) Ideas, Knowledge and Writing in (and about) History.

The international growth of the Program appears in the circulation of foreign researchers at UFG, in the innumerous research and teaching missions and in the post-doctoral programs abroad done by faculty members. In this line, the Program also stimulates students to participate in programs at foreign Universities. In addition, PPGH has many cooperation agreements with universities in Germany, Spain, France, Mexico and Portugal.

PPGH considers its integration with the under-graduation courses strategic; a way to strengthen the links between teaching and research, and to stimulate future researchers. All professors teach under-graduate classes and many of them area advisors for the senior capstone research projects.

In the last tri-annual evaluation (2010-2012) PPGH received a very good rating of 5 from the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), an organ of Ministry of Education.
